Erwin Peterman is Professor Physics of Living Systems at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. As an experimental single-molecule biophysicist het develops advanced single-molecule instrumentation (including fluorescence microscopy and optical tweezers) and applies these tools to different biological problems. Currently he focusses on two main topics. The mechanical properties of DNA and chromosomes, and DNA repair, and intracellular transport and ciliary biophysics in live C. elegans. He has published 110+ scientific articles and supervised 18 PhD students. He has received several prestigious grants, including an ERC Advanced Grant and an NWO Vici grant. He is co-inventor on 9 patents and patent applications, and cofounder of the single-molecule instrumentation company LUMICKS b.v..
